For me, Christmas growing up meant tuning in to The Cinnamon Bear. Each December, a Portland station (KEX) would air a fifteen-minute episode nightly, following Judy and Jimmy’s magical journey through Maybeland as they searched for the missing Silver Star for their Christmas tree. The story is filled with imaginative places like the Root Beer Ocean and Looking Glass Valley, and unforgettable characters like the Crazy Quilt Dragon and the Wintergreen Witch. And, of course, Santa Claus and the North Pole added that extra sparkle.
Due to copyright laws, many old-time radio shows are now public domain, and The Cinnamon Bear is freely available. Some radio stations still air it each year, but if you’d rather listen on your own schedule, I’ve collected every episode here. The series is meant to be enjoyed once daily from November 29th through Christmas Eve, as it was originally aired. I loved listening as a kid, and modern families tell me their children love it too. So grab a cozy blanket, gather your family, and let the holiday magic unfold.
Growing up, my siblings and I would huddle around the wood stove, eagerly tuning into each episode. Now, with modern technology, you can download the MP3s and listen wherever you like. Whether you’re curled up under an electric blanket or tucking your children into bed, The Cinnamon Bear makes for a delightful, no-cost holiday tradition.
And if you’re in Portland, don’t miss the Cinnamon Bear cruise on the Portland Spirit. Each December, families can board for a magical two-hour journey complete with character meet-and-greets, story time with Queen Melissa, and a magic show by Presto. It’s a festive way to celebrate, and the cruise even offers a children’s book and a collection of the radio episodes in their gift shop.
I hope you and your loved ones enjoy The Cinnamon Bear as much as I do. It’s a beautiful way to bring a little old-timey magic to your holiday season.
