Kobe Bryant cards are some of the most sought-after in the sports card market, known to fetch impressive prices at auction. One of the rarest, the 1997-98 Metal Universe Precious Metal Gems Emerald, sold for $2 million in 2022, setting a record as the world’s priciest basketball card. With only 10 of these cards in existence, they are treasured by collectors worldwide. “This is arguably Kobe’s best card in existence,” stated Jesse Craig, PWCC’s Director of Business Development.
For those who grew up before the 2000s, collecting cards was often a badge of honor, though many didn’t understand their future value. Some of these nostalgic treasures now lie tucked away in attics and garages—potentially waiting to be rediscovered as valuable relics. And while some rare cards are unattainable, there are still Kobe Bryant cards available at accessible prices.
According to Warren Laufer of Arena Club, Kobe Bryant’s card market is still accessible, with prices currently below the record highs of 2021 and early 2022. He points out that Kobe’s legacy transcends the court, embodied by the “Mamba Mentality” that continues to inspire fans. Laufer notes, “Kobe is one of just a few athletes with multiple card sales above $1 million, underscoring his enduring impact and the high-end demand for his collectibles.”
A few of Kobe’s rookie cards remain both iconic and reasonably priced. The 1996-97 Topps rookie card, for instance, fluctuates in price but averages around $299, offering an entry point for collectors.
Kobe’s passing in January 2020 prompted a surge in demand for memorabilia. In the two weeks following his death, eBay reported a 600% spike in Kobe card sales. In March 2021, a Kobe Bryant card fetched $1.795 million at Goldin Auctions. Known as the 1996-97 Topps Chrome Refractor, this card is one of just two in perfect condition worldwide. “Kobe’s rookie card, in black label pristine condition, is incredibly rare and embodies his legacy as a fierce competitor,” said Ken Goldin, founder of Goldin Auctions.
While some of Kobe’s cards are rare and costly, others can be found at more affordable price points. Here’s a closer look at several notable Kobe Bryant rookie cards on the market:
- Topps Base Rookie Card – A widely recognized Kobe rookie card, it lacks premium features but remains highly popular. It’s priced between $200 and $2,500 based on condition.
- Bowman’s Best Rookie Card – A rarer card showing a young Kobe smiling on the court. Prices start around $180 but can reach $1,259 with reputable sellers.
- Topps Finest Rookie Card – This series featured Kobe in two separate cards, often with a protective film. These typically range from $360 to $900.
- Flair Showcase Rookie Card – One of the most visually striking cards, it blends an action shot with a portrait. Valued between $150 and $1,850, it’s one of the most coveted Kobe cards on the market.
