Carl Gunns, the owner of Gunns Gym in Birstall, has decided to part with a significant portion of his 45-year collection to support the needs of the community.
Gunns Gym, located on Birstall Road, was initially established with the help of funds raised from selling part of Carl’s memorabilia collection. Since its inception, the gym has grown considerably, becoming one of the largest in the country. It now operates six days a week and attracts hundreds of regular visitors.

“I think I probably had one of the biggest collections in Europe at one time,” Carl remarked. “But the kids are far more important than my collection. The gym is of big importance to the community, and we get a lot of interest. This money will hopefully keep the facilities up to date as it needs a bit of work doing.”
Despite the gym’s success and its significant role in the community, plans to expand into a new venue for individuals over the age of 16 have encountered a setback. The local planning authority, Charnwood Borough Council, recently refused planning permission for the proposed extension.
