In the quaint town of Bethel, Maine, a new beacon of cultural and scientific exploration has emerged with the opening of the Maine Mineral & Gem Museum (MMGM). This state-of-the-art facility, spanning 15,000 square feet across three floors, boasts an impressive collection of 40,000 gems and minerals, 6,000 meteorites, and a comprehensive library of 10,000 volumes, alongside nearly two dozen interactive exhibits designed to engage and educate visitors of all ages.
The museum’s collection is highlighted by the single oldest igneous rock in the solar system and a moon rock five times larger than any returned to Earth by an Apollo mission. It also features exotic specimens from Mars and fragments of asteroids, offering a unique glimpse into the cosmos. The MMGM pays homage to Maine’s rich mining tradition, showcasing historic mineral collections such as the Perham Collection, and celebrating the state’s renowned specimens of tourmaline, beryl, and other native gems.
Behind this monumental project are co-founders Dr. Lawrence Stifler and Mary McFadden, whose passion for conservation and education led to the museum’s creation. Their vision was supported by an all-star team of experts, including museum curator Dr. Carl Francis and renowned pegmatologist Dr. William “Skip” Simmons, alongside cosmochemists Dr. Alan Rubin and Dr. Henning Haack.
The MMGM is not just a museum but also a cutting-edge research and educational facility, equipped with an on-site laboratory featuring advanced mineralogical research instruments. This setup positions the museum as a global hub for scholars interested in the study of the moon, minerals, and more.
Designed by the Paulus Design Group and featuring interactive exhibits by 1220 Exhibits, the MMGM stands as a tribute to the miners, scientists, lapidaries, and educators who have contributed to the field.
